Request to Pay (SEPA Request-to-Pay / SRTP) is a messaging layer that lets a creditor send an electronic payment request to a debtor. It is not a payment instrument itself; it is an invitation/request mechanism for initiating a payment.
How does it work?
- The creditor sends a payment request that includes the amount and the due date.
- The debtor sees the request and can accept and pay it, defer it, or decline it.
- If accepted, the payment usually takes place via SCT or SCT Instant.
What is it for?
It simplifies reconciliation in invoice collection, e-commerce and person-to-person requests; it links the payment request to the payment itself.
R2P is not a payment but a payment-request standard; the acceptance and payment step is separate.
