IBAN Validation

Check the mathematical validity of an IBAN (MOD-97 checksum) and see the country and SEPA coverage.

Updated:

Privacy: The calculation runs in your browser; the full IBAN, account number, amount and reference you enter are not sent to a server, logged or passed to analytics. Some tools may pass only a non-sensitive term (e.g. bank code, BIC, currency) to a lookup service for search/matching. Per-tool detail: Privacy.

How is an IBAN validated?

An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) consists of a country code (2 letters), a two-digit check number and a country-specific BBAN part. Validation goes through three steps:

  • Length check: Each country's IBAN length is fixed (e.g. Germany 22, Turkey 26).
  • Character check: Only letters and digits are present; spaces are ignored.
  • MOD-97 checksum (ISO 7064): The first four characters are moved to the end, letters are converted to numbers, and the remainder of the resulting large number divided by 97 must be 1.

SEPA coverage

If the country code is within the SEPA geographic coverage, the tool indicates it. For SEPA membership see SEPA countries and SEPA country lookup.
