Not verified: As of the date this page was last updated, no official and definitive first operation date for Turkey's SEPA participation has been announced. Be cautious of content that claims otherwise.
How does a country join SEPA?
SEPA participation is less a single "entry" moment than a process. In broad terms: the relevant country's payment sector and regulators apply for participation to the European Payments Council (EPC), technical and legal compliance is assessed, and then banks join the schemes (SCT, SDD, etc.) one by one. Each step takes time and is reflected to the public at different times.
The participation process: stage by stage
The answer to "when?" depends on which stage of the process you are talking about. The timeline below shows the typical stages a country goes through when joining SEPA. Turkey is in the early stages of this process: on 2 July 2026 it officially submitted its letter of intent to join SEPA to the EPC (confirmed by the joint statement of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance and the EU EEAS). But it has not yet been accepted into the geographical scope; the technical/legal assessment and operational-start stages are later steps.
Political / institutional will
The payment sector and regulators move toward participation.
Application to the EPC
A participation application is submitted to the European Payments Council.
Technical and legal review
The compliance of the infrastructure and legal framework with SEPA is assessed.
Admission to the geographical scope
The country is added to the SEPA geographical scope list (permission/eligibility).
Banks' scheme participation
Banks join the SCT, SCT Instant and SDD schemes one by one.
Operational start
Banks actually begin making SEPA transactions.
Opening of customer products
The service is offered to individual and corporate customers.
As you can see, there are many stages between "the application" and "users being able to actually do SEPA". For this reason, instead of waiting for a single "entry date", it is more accurate to follow which stage the process is at. For the difference between the geographical scope and the operational start, see the What is the SEPA operation date page.
Why can't we give a definite date?
Giving a definite date would be speculation and, on a financial (YMYL) topic, could mislead users. The process depends on regulatory decisions, technical preparations and the banks' participation, and the timing of these cannot be known for certain in advance. For this reason we avoid definitive claims such as "it will join on this date" and share only what is verifiable. We recommend being cautious of third-party content that gives a definite date.
What is verifiable right now?
- On 2 July 2026, Turkey officially submitted its letter of intent to the EPC to join SEPA — confirmed by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance statement and the EU EEAS joint statement (confidence level A).
- Turkey still does not appear on the SEPA geographical scope list published by the EPC; even though the letter of intent has been submitted, acceptance has not taken place (confidence level A).
- No official acceptance decision or operation-start date has been announced.
How can I follow developments?
You can follow the current status from the Turkey SEPA page, and the changes made from the change log. Every verified new piece of information is added with its source and date.
Frequently asked questions
When will Turkey join SEPA?
No definitive, official date has been announced. Participation is a staged process; every verified development is updated on this site with its source. Be cautious of content that gives a definite date.
Once accepted into SEPA, can it be used immediately?
No. Admission to the geographical scope is the first step; then the banks' scheme participation and operational start are required. What makes the real difference for the user is the operational start.
Why is the process taking so long?
The technical and legal compliance assessment, the banks' readiness and the opening of products each take time separately. That is why there can be a long gap between 'the application' and 'users being able to do SEPA'.
