- Correspondent bank deductions may not be fully known in advance
SEPA or SWIFT?
If the payment is in euro and both parties are within SEPA, a SEPA transfer is usually much cheaper and faster; in the SEPA chain there is usually no correspondent/intermediary bank deduction as in SWIFT, and the instructed amount is passed to the recipient in full. Even so, the sender's/recipient's bank service fee and — if you send from a non-euro balance or the recipient account is not in euro — a currency conversion (exchange-rate margin) before/after SEPA can create a cost. SWIFT, on the other hand, is used for non-SEPA countries and non-euro currencies, and intermediary (correspondent) bank charges may be added. For detail, see SEPA vs SWIFT?
