Even when the transfer fee is zero, the exchange-rate margin can increase the total cost. The market rate is the live ECB reference; the real bank rate is lower by a margin.

The market rate and the estimated bank/alternative rate are filled in automatically by currency; you can overwrite them by entering your own rate.

How does this tool calculate?

Medium — estimate derived from a tariff
Method/formula used
margin_rate = |bank_rate − market_rate| / market_rate · fx_cost = principal × margin_rate. The market rate comes from the live ECB reference; the bank rate is estimated by default with a margin.
Data used
Live ECB reference rate (frankfurter.app) + a default/entered bank margin (live)
Rounding
Amounts to 2 decimals
Unsupported cases
  • Does not replace a real bank tariff/rate — enter your own rate to finalise

What is the exchange-rate margin?

The exchange-rate margin is the difference between the rate the bank or provider applies to you and the real market (reference) rate. Formula: margin = |bank_rate − market_rate| / market_rate. Even when the transfer is "free", this margin is a hidden cost on every unit you convert.

Non-euro countries and Turkey

In places such as Turkey (TRY), Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Sweden, the main cost is often not the transfer fee but the exchange-rate margin. This tool fetches the live ECB reference rate and applies a typical bank margin; you can finalise it by entering your own bank's rate.
