How Much Reaches the Recipient?

Calculate the estimated amount reaching the recipient and the total cost according to the charge-sharing option (OUR / SHA / BEN).

Updated:

This is an estimate. Intermediary bank charges may not be fully known in advance.
Charge sharing

How does this tool calculate?

Low — scenario based on user input
Method/formula used
SWIFT charge-sharing (OUR/SHA/BEN) + an estimate of the amount reaching the recipient based on the fees and exchange-rate margin you enter.
Data used
User inputs; OUR/SHA/BEN is a SWIFT/correspondent-banking concept
Rounding
Amounts are rounded to 2 decimal places
Unsupported cases
  • SEPA transfers — there is no OUR/SHA/BEN in SEPA, SLEV applies and the amount is passed on in full
  • Intermediary bank charges may not be fully known in advance

What are OUR, SHA, BEN?

OUR / SHA / BEN are charge-sharing codes specific to SWIFT / correspondent banking (SWIFT MT103 field 71A). Where a transfer passes through several intermediary (correspondent) banks, they determine who bears the fees. This tool models SWIFT-type transfers.

  • OUR: The sender pays all the charges; the recipient receives the principal amount in full (except the exchange-rate margin).
  • SHA: The sender pays their own bank's charge; the intermediary and recipient bank charges are deducted from the transfer.
  • BEN: All the charges are deducted from the transfer; the recipient receives less net.
There is no OUR/SHA/BEN choice in SEPA. The SEPA Credit Transfer works on the fixed SLEV / shared principle set by the EPC rulebook: the sender pays their own bank and the recipient pays their own bank separately; the instructed amount is passed to the recipient in full and intermediary banks in the SEPA chain do not deduct from that amount. That is why this charge-sharing choice does not apply to SEPA transfers; the tool is only meaningful for SWIFT/correspondent transfers. (Source: EPC SCT Rulebook, §4.2.4.)
