What Is camt? Bank Account Reporting Messages

camt is the account reporting message family in the ISO 20022 standard. This guide explains the camt.052, camt.053 and camt.054 messages, how they differ from one another, and their relationship with the pain/pacs messages.

Quick answer

camt messages are the reporting messages with which a bank informs its customer of the situation of their account.

They do not initiate any money movement — that is the job of pain (customer instruction) and pacs (bank-to-bank) messages. camt only reports what has happened, which movement occurred in the account, and what the balance is. The three most common are: camt.052 (intraday report), camt.053 (daily statement), camt.054 (debit/credit notification).

camt is the abbreviation of the Cash Management message family in the ISO 20022 messaging standard. In the financial communication between a bank and a customer, camt messages carry the status and the movements of an account in a structured (machine-readable) form. This lets corporate accounting and reconciliation processes import the file directly into software instead of processing the bank statement by hand. In this guide we explain the three most-used messages of the camt family, how they differ from one another, and their relationship with the payment initiation messages.

camt is a reporting message — it does not move money

In the ISO 20022 world, separating messages by their role is the key to not confusing the concepts. In the life cycle of a euro payment, different message families take on different jobs:

  • pain (Payment Initiation): The payment instruction going from the customer to the bank. For example, pain.001 is a credit transfer instruction; pain.002 is the status report that feeds back the accept/reject state of that instruction. pain says "make this payment".
  • pacs (Payments Clearing and Settlement): The settlement messages that circulate between banks (and clearing systems). In a SEPA credit transfer, the message the sending bank passes to the recipient bank is in this family. The customer does not see these messages directly.
  • camt (Cash Management): The reporting messages going from the bank to the customer. It says "these movements occurred in your account, your balance is such-and-such". It initiates no money movement; it only reports what has already happened.

This distinction matters in practice: a camt file is not a payment order. Sending a camt.053 statement back to the bank does not start a new transfer; it is only a report of the past. To initiate a payment, the pain family is used (see pain.002 status report).

Comparison of camt.052, camt.053 and camt.054

All three messages report the same account but work at different times and at different levels of detail. You grasp the difference most easily with the question "when is it produced and what does it cover":

Message When / scope What it contains Who / what it is used for
camt.052
Intraday report (Account Report)
During the day, on request/by period; a current view not yet "closed" (intraday). The movements up to that moment and the instant/provisional balance. Not the finalised end-of-day balance. Cash/liquidity management (treasury): monitoring the balance and incoming payments during the day.
camt.053
Daily statement (Bank Statement)
Usually at the end of the day, for a whole account period. The official, finalised statement. All movements of the period, opening and closing balances. The definitive record accounting relies on. Accounting and reconciliation: matching the ledger with the bank record, closing.
camt.054
Debit/credit notification (Debit/Credit Notification)
When a specific movement occurs; an individual or batch notification, without waiting for the statement. The detail of a single debit/credit entry or of a batch item (e.g. the breakdown of a bulk payment). Automation: credit matching, splitting out bulk payment items, early notification.

In practice, most organisations use camt.053 as the backbone of daily reconciliation, camt.052 for intraday liquidity tracking, and camt.054 for the early and detailed notification of specific receivables. The three do not replace one another; they serve different timing and purposes.

Automatic reconciliation: the real value of camt

The importance of camt messages for organisations comes from automatic reconciliation. Thanks to the structured XML, accounting software can match every incoming movement against its own open items. The key to this matching is the references carried end to end along the payment chain — especially the EndToEndId field. The party initiating the payment puts an EndToEndId in the pain.001 instruction; this reference travels through the bank chain in the pacs messages and comes back in the recipient's camt.053/054 report. In this way the recipient can automatically match the incoming amount without manually searching for which invoice/transaction it belongs to.

Similarly, the structured payment reference included in a SEPA credit transfer (see SEPA payment reference) is also carried in the camt reports and eases reconciliation. That is why, for businesses with many incoming payments, camt.053 is a far more reliable and faster reconciliation source than reading the PDF of a bank statement by hand.

camt versions and practical notes

camt messages are versioned by the ISO 20022 registration authority; the number at the end of the message identifier (e.g. camt.053.001.02 versus camt.053.001.08) indicates the version. Banks publish which version and which optional fields they support in their own technical documentation; that is why the files of the same camt type between two banks can differ in terms of field usage. Before processing a camt file, it is best to look at the relevant bank's ISO 20022 implementation guide — the supported version, the mandatory fields and how the reference fields are filled can vary by bank.

In short, camt is the reporting layer in SEPA and the wider ISO 20022 ecosystem: pain and pacs carry the money, camt reports the result. Knowing this distinction lets you correctly understand what a file is for and what it cannot do.

Summary

  • camt = the ISO 20022 account reporting family; it does not initiate money movement, it reports.
  • camt.052 is the intraday report, camt.053 the daily official statement, camt.054 the individual/batch debit-credit notification.
  • The payment is carried by pain (customer instruction) and pacs (bank-to-bank); camt reports the result.
  • References such as EndToEndId make automatic reconciliation possible in camt reports.

Frequently asked questions

What is a camt message?

camt (Cash Management) is the account reporting message family in the ISO 20022 standard. A bank sends camt messages to inform its customer of the account's movements and balance. The three most common are camt.052 (intraday report), camt.053 (daily statement) and camt.054 (individual debit/credit notification).

What is the difference between camt and pain?

pain (Payment Initiation) messages initiate a payment; they carry the 'make this payment' instruction from the customer to the bank. camt messages, on the other hand, do not initiate any money movement; they only report what has happened in the account. In short: pain instructs, camt reports the result.

What is the difference between camt.053 and camt.054?

camt.053 is the official bank statement covering a whole day and is usually produced at the end of the day. camt.054 is a notification message that additionally reports an individual or a batch debit/credit movement; it is used to convey the detail of a specific transaction without waiting for the statement.

How do I read a camt message?

camt messages are in XML format and are hard to read by hand. To convert your camt.053/054 file to CSV or JSON in the browser you can use our camt converter tool; the file is processed entirely on your device, without being sent to a server.
